Question 2 of 8
2. Question
Question 2
In this question you will be selecting and sizing the battery based on the loads and demands. Note: Selecting and sizing the battery is an iterative process as you need to consider the efficiencies when calculating the minimum capacities and demands. The process is as follows, although it can be done differently:
- Select a suitable inverter based on the specified load table from part 1). Size based on the maximum demand and the surge demand. In this design task we consider the surge demand as the main functionality of the system is to backup loads in a grid blackout. Consider the system configuration you will use. You must use a product from the specified product list in the design task instructions.
- Based on the inverter you have selected, calculate the minimum battery capacity, maximum demand and surge demand below. Ensure your inverter can supply this capacity, maximum demand and surge demand.
- Select a compatible battery(or batteries) based on the inverter you have selected. Also ensure the battery can provide the capacity, maximum demand and surge demand.
- You will state the final configuration in the next question.
Can your selected battery and inverter configuration provide the capacity (a), maximum demand (b) and surge demand (c) that you have calculated? If not will increasing the number of batteries work? Is the system you selected the best option? Or will selecting another battery model work better? State your final BESS configuration in the next question.
b) Determine the minimum usable battery capacity to supply the specified loads (determined in part 1) during the 24hr period. Assume the voltage drop from the battery to the loads is 5%. And count minimum usable battery capacity in Wh
Hint: Ensure you include the relevant efficiencies in your calculation; inverter efficiency and cable efficiency. Refer to sizing and selecting battery storage book.
